With the arrival of spring, we often encounter sneezes, watery eyes, coughs, and the challenge of determining the right dosage for cold medications and antibiotics.

Have you ever thought about the significance of administering the correct dosage of any medication for children throughout their developmental stages?
How do you determine the right amount?
Here are some general guidelines to consider when pondering this question:
- Consult your local pharmacy. Be sure to have the child’s age and weight on hand, as dosage can differ based on these factors. Additionally, be informed about any other medications your child may be taking.
- Examine the packaging. If you are using an over-the-counter medicine recommended by a doctor, review the dosage instructions on the label carefully. Make sure you have accurate age and weight details before administering.
- Avoid using household utensils (such as teaspoons) for measurement. Instead, utilize a syringe, oral dropper, dosing spoon, or medication cup that displays proper volume markings for a precise dosage.
- Do not mix medications, including herbal supplements, unless advised by a healthcare professional. If your child exhibits multiple symptoms, seek out a formulation that addresses all concerns, as combining different medications can lead to adverse reactions.

It’s interesting to note that two children of the same size and age might respond very differently to the same recommended dosage.
Children’s Mercy is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of how genetics, development stages, illnesses, and environmental aspects influence a child’s reaction to medications. Their “Goldilocks” strategy aims to find the optimal dosage when administering treatment, which is a central focus of Children’s Mercy. All healthcare professionals on the team are rigorously trained to cater to children’s specific needs, equipped with the expertise necessary for prescribing accurate dosages, frequencies, and treatment plans for various conditions. Whether it’s managing leukemia or simple colds, it’s crucial for both medical practitioners and parents to recognize effective dosing practices.
Currently, Children’s Mercy is developing a new system called GOLDILOKs, designed to assist physicians in identifying the correct dosage for conditions like leukemia, ADHD, and more. This platform utilizes patients’ medical histories to deliver instantaneous results, allowing doctors to adjust dosages based on the intended outcome for each child. It is also being applied in research concerning cardiology medications, asthma treatments, and beyond. To learn more about GOLDILOKs, click here.

When my niece and nephews are unwell, they often stay with me because their parents are at work. I always double-check the dosages for any medication. It’s important to remember that even over-the-counter medicines can contain potent ingredients.
