The perception that video games dull the mind is completely unfounded. Many video games can actually be quite educational, with some effectively encouraging cognitive expansion. This article explores how video games can enhance creativity.

The link between gaming and creativity in kids

Research from Michigan State University indicates that, on average, 12-year-olds who engage in video gaming tend to excel in creative activities such as story writing and artistic drawing.

While the study also examined the effects of mobile phone and internet use, it found that those forms of technology did not stimulate creativity to the same degree as video games. This points to the conclusion that video games are significantly more effective in igniting our imaginative potential compared to other digital platforms.

Not all games spur creativity equally

According to researchers Seyedahmad Rahimi and Valerie Shute, while video games can foster creativity, some are particularly more adept at sparking our imaginative capacities than others.

Games with linear challenges leading to a single solution may improve problem-solving skills but often fall short in promoting broader creativity. Instead, games that feature open-ended gameplay allow for exploration and personalization. Titles that enable players to create levels or customize characters stand out in this regard.

A quintessential example is Minecraft, which nurtures creativity by allowing players to create their own adventures without predefined objectives. Although there are survival servers that involve leveling up, players have the freedom to shape their experiences. The expansive map encourages users to design and construct intricate structures, leading to the creation of entire cities and imaginative kingdoms.

Other notable titles such as LittleBigPlanet, Roblox, The Sims, and Garry’s Mod similarly focus on creation and exploration. These games, often categorized as sandbox games, resemble a child’s play area, allowing players to experiment and build without restrictions. Elements of sandbox gameplay can also be found in various other games, including Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, and Animal Crossing. However, it’s important to note that not all of these are suitable for younger audiences—Minecraft, Roblox, and LittleBigPlanet are all appropriate for kids.

In addition to selecting the right game, it’s essential to provide children with a proper gaming environment and equipment. Ensuring good internet connectivity is crucial for an optimal gaming experience. Conducting an internet speed test can help you confirm that your connection is up to the task, making gaming more enjoyable for children.

Exploring alternatives to video games for creativity enhancement

While video games can be a valuable tool for boosting creativity, there are numerous other avenues to explore. If you want to inspire creativity in yourself or encourage a child to engage in creative pursuits without the risk of becoming overly reliant on video gaming, consider the following activities:

  • Reading books
  • Drawing or painting
  • Constructing with Lego
  • Composing music
  • Writing short stories
  • Crafting poetry
  • Producing YouTube videos
  • Taking photographs
  • Experimenting with makeup artistry
  • Clay modeling
  • Engaging in paper crafts
  • Playing board games like Scrabble and Pictionary
