My son’s birthday is just around the corner. Recently, while he was riding his bike, I noticed that he has outgrown it after a growth spurt. What could be a better present for a summer birthday than a brand new bike? Excited, we decided to visit Wal-Mart.

The very first bicycle I received as a child was a Schwinn. My parents let me choose it from a nearby bike shop for my birthday, and I can still recall the joy I felt riding that adorable pink bike adorned with floral patterns and a white banana seat. I was so proud, riding it home and eager for everyone to see my new ride. It served me well for many years.

These fond memories have persisted as I’ve grown up. Established in 1895, Schwinn is America’s oldest bicycle brand. They offer a limited lifetime warranty on their bikes, which encourages me to guide my children toward selecting Schwinn bicycles for themselves.

For my son, choosing a bike is all about aesthetics and how cool it looks. For me, however, my primary focus is on safety. That’s why, after selecting his new bike, we immediately went to find a helmet.

My son Ethan is thrilled with his new Schwinn, and I’m glad to see him enjoying riding again. You can really feel the quality difference just by comparing them in the store, which translates to added safety back home. Now that he is nearing 7 years old, he’s eager to race down hills and compete with his friends. While accidents can happen, I find solace in knowing that any mishaps are due to user error rather than a faulty bike.

Since we got the bike fully assembled, we brought it inside for a quick safety check before allowing Ethan to take it for a spin downhill. For those retrieving their bicycles from winter storage, a thorough checkup is crucial to ensure a safe riding experience as biking season begins.

By utilizing the Schwinn checklist, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your bike is ready for safe rides.

Schwinn Safety Checklist

Safety Checklist:

  • Helmet: Ensure it fits properly and rests correctly on the head (not on the back).
  • Tires: Confirm they are adequately inflated and can hold air.
  • Brakes: Check they are correctly adjusted for smooth stopping.
  • Seat: Verify it’s at the appropriate height. If your feet can touch the ground flat, it’s time to raise it a bit!
  • Reflectors: Are they securely attached?
  • Pedals: Make sure they are sturdy and show no signs of damage.

The excitement of riding a bike, from your initial ride without training wheels to summer outings with friends at the beach, never wanes. Even if you haven’t been on a bike in a while, the joy and laughter will soon return. Biking is a fantastic, healthy activity that can be enjoyed at any age and with family or friends.

Schwinn bikes can be found at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com

Oh, my first bike was a tricycle that I received for Christmas! My mom let me ride it around the house! My second bike was a Schwinn in purple with a white banana seat.
