Welcome Spring! DIY Chocolate Pretzel Bird’s Nest

Chocolate Pretzel Nest

Last weekend, my oldest daughter returned home from college, and we found ourselves snowed in (yay!). To keep ourselves entertained, we decided to get creative in the kitchen.

I had come across a recipe for chocolate bird nests a while ago and suggested we give it a whirl. These delightful treats are quite popular online, and while I’m not sure of their original source, I developed my method through experimentation after seeing just a picture. (If you have any tips for improvement, I’d love to hear them!)

Ingredients you will need:

  • Pretzels (we opted for sticks, but traditional ones work too)
  • Melting chocolate (we used Wilton brand, but chocolate chips are also suitable)
  • Candy eggs (we used Reese’s Pieces eggs)

Making the Nest

Start by taking a handful of pretzels and break them into smaller pieces. Place them in a bowl and drizzle a spoonful of chocolate on them. Stir to coat and repeat as necessary. Continue this process until the pretzels are well covered, but avoid making them too soggy, as excess moisture can prolong drying time.

Shaping the Nest

Here comes the fun part! I initially built my nest as a mound and carefully shaped it to create a center space large enough for three eggs. My daughter shaped hers into a triangle before working on the middle. Be aware that the chocolate will start to set as you mold it, so try to be decisive. Once happy with the shape, gently place your candy eggs in the cavity, and you’re finished!

*Tip: If your nest hardens too much before adding the eggs, they may not stay in place. You can add a bit more chocolate in the center, or work quickly to ensure the chocolate on the pretzels adheres to the eggs.

Allow your creations to dry until they form a solid piece that is easy to lift. You can serve them as is or use them to decorate cupcakes. The possibilities are endless—let your imagination run wild!

Enjoy!
