The final weeks of summer have turned into quite a busy time for me. With two youngsters preparing for college and two others returning to elementary school, I’ve been coordinating various shopping trips and making lots of plans! As any mom can relate, priorities shift, especially when it comes to our kids. I thought I’d hold off on touching up my hair color until after they were settled back in school, intending to visit the salon then.
In the meantime, I tried my usual tricks for hiding my roots, such as changing the direction of my part and adding some volume. Sadly, even those strategies were proving ineffective as my roots became increasingly visible. While out shopping with the kids, I decided to swing by Sephora to grab Madison Reed’s new product: Root Touch Up.
I discovered the Root Touch Up placed near the checkout in the hair care aisle. With a selection of seven shades available, I found it challenging to choose the right color. With my hair having three distinct shades, I sought help from an attendant, who was both friendly and knowledgeable, quickly guiding me to the product I needed—much faster than a typical salon visit!
The Madison Reed Root Touch Up comes in a convenient compact with an applicator brush. To use it, you just brush it from roots to tips, effectively covering up any regrowth or rogue gray hairs until your next coloring. As I was reaching the point of desperation—yelling, “I can’t take this anymore!”—I was excited to give it a try.
My most noticeable issue has been my part. I naturally have dark brown hair, which can look particularly greasy as it grows out, even right after a wash. One of the standout benefits of the Madison Reed Root Touch Up is that it functions like a dry shampoo, helping to reduce shine. Once applied, it stays put—holding up through exercise and even rain. And surprisingly, it doesn’t leave color on my pillow, even during the rare instances when I manage to nap.
Given the three shades in my hair, I managed to achieve the look I wanted with Root Touch Up without any issues. I didn’t aim for an all-blonde appearance, as that would just create another dilemma for me. Instead, I opted for the Light Blonde shade on my roots and made a single pass over the area. I was genuinely surprised by how well it covered with just a few strokes, leaving me feeling confident that my roots wouldn’t be the center of attention anymore.
I felt good about choosing Madison Reed, as their products are free from harsh chemicals like titanium dioxide, sulfates, parabens, and gluten, making them suitable for those sensitive to such ingredients.
Incorporating the Root Touch Up into my morning routine was straightforward and added no extra time to my makeup application. It was significantly easier than re-arranging my hair to conceal my roots. As a bonus, it can even be applied to eyebrows with a smaller brush! This product has been a wonderful interim solution until I’m able to give my hair the care it truly deserves.

This is fantastic! I often don’t have the time or resources for a full hair color but really need to address my roots. This offers a perfect solution to maintain my hair color longer! I’ll definitely give this a shot!
